Don Bussey age 79 of Guin, AL passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in Birmingham.

Born June 2, 1937 in Shawnee, Oklahoma he is the Son of the late Thomas Clyde and Ruth Elois Ray Bussey.He attended Jefferson Elementary School, Shawnee Central Junior High School, and Shawnee High School from which he graduated in 1955.In 1956 he attended Oklahoma Military Academy where he lettered in baseball, football, and track. On August 2, 1957 he married Brenda Ownby.He received a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry from Oklahoma State University in 1959.Following graduation he was hired by the university as herdsman for the pure bred cattle at Fort Reno, OK.The heard totaled 433 head of angus and herefords.

In 1978 Don, Danny McDaniel and Don's brother, Joe Bussey purchased what is now State Bank and Trust.Don served on the Board of Directors.In 1995, following Danny's death, Don assumed the position of CEO and Chairman of the Board.


Don purchased his first cutting horse in 1978.He was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, serving more than one term on the executive board and as president in 2003.He was a lifetime director for Alabama and a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association.He was later inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame.Don and 2 partners produced a major annual cutting horse show for many years, first in Memphis, TN and later moving to Tunica, MS.

He is survived by his Wife, Brenda Ownby Bussey of Guin, AL, 2 Sons, Buck (Shelly) Bussey of Crossville, TN, Bret (Bobbie) Bussey of Guin, AL, 9 Grandchildren, Cody, Jake (Andrea),Nick (Sarah), Luke (Hannah), Payt, Bailee Rose, Boone, Kody and Kalena, 1 Great Granddaughter, Ella Rose and 6 Nieces and Nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a Daughter, Lisa Jayne Bussey, a Brother, Joe Clyde Bussey, and a Sister In Law, Jo Dee Bussey.


Services Friday 3:00 pm from the Guin First Baptist Church with burial in the Guin City Cemetery. Visitation Friday 1 - 3 pm at the Guin First Baptist Church. The family will also receive friends after the service at the church.
